Hot Tubs and Arthritis

One in three Americans – roughly 70 million people – suffer from some form of arthritis, of which there are over 100 different kinds. Most kinds of arthritis are characterized by joint inflammation that causes swelling, pain and stiffness, often resulting in loss of joint movement or function. Many people affected by arthritis seek relief by soaking in a warm hot tub, a safe and effective way to both minimize discomfort and prevent further damage.

The Arthritis Foundation maintains that a hot tub's heat and buoyancy create an environment for helping relieve arthritis pain and stiffness. The body's weight is supported by the water, which lessens stress on joints and muscles, thus encouraging free movement. Regular sessions in a hot tub can restore and preserve strength and flexibility. Talk with your doctor to determine whether a hot tub is right for you.
